The new EU circular economy package is committed developing a number of actions to promote further uptake of water reuse wherever it is cost-efficient and safe for health and the environment.
The main objective of the CLEaN-TOUR project is to develop knowledge, technologies and tools on wastewater treatment in order to facilitate expanding urban water reuse in touristic regions.
The CLEaN-TOUR project will demonstrate the safe water reuse for irrigation and other uses that require high quality water, thus giving a step forwards the circular economy in tourist regions, where the demand for water is usually very high. The project will analyze both centralized and decentralized systems (for example, hotels) for greywater treatment with innovative technologies such as osmotic membrane bioreactors and hydroponic technologies, to address: (1) the elimination of emerging contaminants and pathogens, (2) the evaluation of the possible risks of water reuse, and (3) the difficulties in selecting the most appropriate scenario (centralized or decentralized).
