CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB

Job location:  ICRA – Catalan Institute for Water Research, Girona (Spain)

Number of positions available: 1

Expected start: November 2022

Temporal Position. The position is for 8 months

Gross Annual Salary package: 20.000 – 23.999 € (to be defined according to demonstrable experience)

 

OFFER DESCRIPTION

Research area at ICRA: Technologies and Evaluation. Project: HYDROUSA – “Demonstration of water loops with innovative regenerative business models for the Mediterranean region” is a European project with a duration of 5 years (2018-2023). HYDROUSA will offer innovative nature based solutions based for the management of water in islands and coastal areas of the Mediterranean, for wastewater treatment, nutrients recovery and supplying fresh water from unconventional water sources. ICRA in the HYDROUSA project will analyse selected organic micropollutants compounds along the water cycle and in the edible part of selected vegetables (irrigated with reclaimed water). Additionally, bacterial antibiotic resistance in the soil will be evaluated to determine potential effects of wastewater fertigation. ICRA will evaluate the performance of the solutions, identifying the most adequate reuse train, apply environmental risk assessment and evaluate food safety issues. Finally, ICRA will be also responsible of transferability to potential sites in the Mediterranean, in particular of Spain and Portugal. https://www.icra.cat/projects/demonstration-water-loops-with-innovative/122 (www.hydrousa.org).

 

KEY DUTIES

The research technician will support the evaluation of the presence of selected organic micropollutants as well as their transformation products in environmental samples like water, soil and/or crops related to WP4, WP5, and WP6 of the HYDROUSA project. The tasks to be accomplished by this fellow involve: (i) sample treatment for the analysis of selected antibiotics in water, soils and/or vegetables by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, (ii) support to ICRA team for the sample preparation, (iii) analysis of organic micropollutans in water, soil and/or vegetable samples, (iv) participation in project meetings, writing of protocols, scientific reports and participation in scientific paper writing, (v) as with all technicians, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows a small proportion of the time will be allocated to communal services such as joint laboratory maintenance etc.

 

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Must have – Required

Research Field or Field of knowledge:

Analytical Chemistry or Environmental Chemistry or Environmental Sciences

 

Qualifications and Education Level:

MSc in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science, Chemistry or similar

 

Skills:

Any of the following past research experiences will be judged favourably in the selection process:

  • Knowledge/experience on studying the fate of organic micropollutants in the environment (water and/or soil)
  • Knowledge/experience in the study of organic compounds in vegetables (or similar matrices like food or biota)
  • Knowledge/experience on LC-MS-MS analysis, and quantification of organic micropollutants
  • Experience in platform presentations and/or in paper/reports elaboration

Ability to work independently and as a member of a team; she/he must be creative, flexible, and eager to learn and to expand his /her scientific network

 

Required Languages:

Spanish, Catalan, English.

 

Required Experience:

Proven experience in analytical chemistry, particularly in mass spectrometry, coupled to LC for the determination of organic micropollutants in environmental samples (water, soil) and/or vegetables.

 

Desirable

Experience in quantification of organic micropollutants (e.g., Xcalibur, TraceFinder), in water and/or soil and/or vegetables.
