Message from the Guest Editor:
Environmental science as a field is at the interface of several disciplines and therefore requires interdisciplinary collaboration in order to develop successful, robust methods for measurements that span analyte classes from small molecules to genes and microplatics and data sets from instantateous snapshots to long-term studies. In this issue, attention will be drawn to cutting-edge method development in the field of environmental chemistry with a broad definition. Current analytes of relevance include the EPA categories of pharmaceuticals and personal care products and contaminants of emerging concern, emphasizing the specific classes of analytes PFOS/PFOA, microplastics, antibiotics and antibiotic resistent genes, amd disinfection byproducts. As each class of analytes is approached, studies focusing on the occurance and/or fate of targeted analytes in real samples in addition to laboratory method development are strongly encouraged.
