Senior Scientist
Michael Gonsior completed his PhD in aquatic biogeochemistry at the Otago University in New Zealand in 2008. He then undertook postdoctoral researcher positions at the University of California Irvine (UCI), USA (2008-2009) and Linköping University, Sweden (2011-2012), before he became an assistant professor (tenure track) at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES), USA in 2012. He became a tenured associate professor in 2018, and then a full professor in 2022. He joined ICRA in 2025. His interest is in characterizing complex dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural and engineered systems using state-of-the-art analytical techniques. His ongoing research involves organic tracer development in complex DOM as well as in source tracking of contaminants, in inhibition of harmful algal blooms and pathogens, and in structural elucidation of novel high molecular weight DBPs. He continues to use photochemistry as a proxy for environmental fate of organic contaminants and to decipher novel degradation products.
