Catalan Water Research Institute research and innovation for the sustainable use of water

The H2O Building, headquarters of the ICRA, was born on October 7, 2009

The H₂O Building, headquarters of the ICRA, was born on October 7, 2009 with the aim of promoting the Catalan Water Research Institute (ICRA) as a country infrastructure, key within the National Pact for to Research and Innovation (PNRI), which must consolidate its commitment to the knowledge economy.

ICRA’s new headquarters, with its emblematic Water Building, is home to top-level research teams, facilities with cutting-edge technologies and research projects able to attract the best talent, nationally and internationally , in order to successfully address the challenges posed by the complex and transversal problem of water.

With more than 20 laboratories and other spaces intended for offices, warehouses and pilot plants

With more than 20 laboratories and other spaces intended for offices, warehouses and pilot plants, equipped both for research work in chemical or biological analysis and for experimentation in aquatic environments, or equipped with computer equipment for projects economic and social, the complex offers shared research spaces, analysis platforms and rooms with multimedia equipment, among others.

ICRA’s scientific equipment has been co-financed by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) and the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), within the framework of the FEDER Operational Program of Catalonia 2007-2013.

The H2O Building consists of 3 modules (M1, M2 and M5) - expandable in the future to 5 (M3 and M4) - and a built surface of 6,770 m2

intended for the transfer of knowledge to companies and the society, to continuing education, training and specialization of technicians and to promote research lines and projects.

  • The M1 module

it is intended for common services. On the ground floor there is the entrance to the building and the reception, as well as the boardroom and function rooms. On the first floor, the administrative and management services of the Institute are included. On the second floor there are common dining and reading spaces for researchers.

  • The M2 module

it is intended for offices and research laboratories, and one floor is allocated for each of ICRA's three research areas.

  • The M5 module

there are the transversal research spaces and the Scientific and Technical Services. Overall, the building consists of a ground floor, two floors and a basement.

Within the 2010-2011 period, and within the framework of the PGE 2010 nominative grant (MICINN currently MINECO), ICRA has been provided with the necessary scientific equipment for the implementation of the research lines AI.1 Hydrologic Processes, AII.4 Ecotoxicological response of biota to pollutants and AIII.4 Unitary Operations. Likewise, the laboratories of the already existing lines AI.2 Lake Systems and Reservoirs and AI.4 Modeling of Ecosystems and basins have been improved.
