On November 26, 2024, researchers from the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA-CERCA), Sara Rodriguez-Mozaz and Santiago Otaiza, participated in the final meeting of the European project JPI ARENA ( Antibiotic REsistaNce and Pathogenic Signature in Marine and Freshwater Aquaculture Systems ), held in Gembloux, Belgium. This project, funded by the EU/PRTR program (Project PCI2021_121929), has addressed the study of the presence of antibiotic residues and the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in marine and freshwater aquaculture facilities in Europe. Final results of the ARENA project
During the meeting, the final results of the research were presented, which include the comprehensive monitoring of antibiotic residues and the factors contributing to the development of antimicrobial resistance in environmental samples. The study focused on water, sediments and biota from aquaculture facilities in several European locations, providing key data to understand the environmental risks associated with the use of antibiotics in this sector.
