On April 24th, 2026, ICRA researchers Josep Pueyo and Joaquim Comas took part in a technical workshop held in Albanyà. The session was coordinated by Pioneers of Our Time and conducted in collaboration with professionals from the Dutch engineering firm Witteveen+Bos.
The meeting focused on developing strategies to increase the water resilience of the upper Muga river basin against the challenges of drought and climate change, as well as defining actions to achieve a high ecological status for this water body. During the workshop, both the natural and urban water cycles were analyzed, highlighting key aspects such as water demand, reuse, aquifer recharge, water retention in the landscape, and opportunities to improve system efficiency.
Furthermore, participants discussed potential nature-based solutions (NBS), river restoration measures, and strategies to improve the basin’s ecological and hydromorphological indicators. The team worked collectively on identifying the pressures and impacts affecting the river system, leading to a preliminary framework of priority measures and specific case studies.
ICRA’s involvement in this Living Lab provided essential scientific and methodological knowledge in areas such as integrated water resources management, water quality, and planning aligned with the Water Framework Directive guidelines.
