The report entitled “El agua de lluvia no es tan limpia” , prepared by journalists Begoña Zubia and Inmaculada Álvarez , has been recognized in the 4th edition of the MASORANGE Journalism and Sustainability Awards in the Audiovisual Media category. This report, which has the collaboration of the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA-CERCA), explores in an educational way the effects of urban rainwater runoff on river ecosystems, providing an educational and conscious look at the environmental challenges related to water management. You can retrieve the report here.

The ICRA-CERCA CityPoll project, on which part of the report is based, investigates how rainwater, apparently clean, transports pollutants from cities to rivers, thus altering water quality and affecting essential elements such as river biofilms . These microorganisms are key to the ecological balance of rivers and their impact has a direct impact on biodiversity and the natural functions of aquatic ecosystems. With an informative approach, Zubia and Álvarez manage to present the complexities of this environmental pollution in an accessible way, facilitating public understanding of how cities affect water resources and possible strategies to mitigate these effects. ICRA’s collaboration in this project reaffirms its commitment to environmental research and the protection of river ecosystems. This recognition in the Journalism and Sustainability Awards not only highlights the journalistic work of its authors, but also underlines the importance of communicating science effectively to raise awareness in society about global sustainability challenges.
