Catalan Water Research Institute research and innovation for the sustainable use of water

This line of research focuses on the carbon cycle in Mediterranean reservoirs, the impacts of climate change on the quality of the water they provide, and the effects of antibiotic pollution on bacterial communities.

The interdisciplinary approach and work at multiple scales are distinctive features of our research.

Research topics:

  • The carbon cycle in fresh waters, including emissions of carbon dioxide and methane and the burial of organic carbon in sediments, with particular attention to the reduction of inland waters.
  • Detection and attribution of climate change impacts on lakes, reservoirs and river networks.
  • Forecast water quality in lakes and reservoirs, and the fate of emerging pollutants on a large scale.
