Ecosystem services related to fresh water and nature-based solutions

Models are ideal heuristic platforms to stimulate critical thinking and generate new hypotheses in environmental sciences.

This line of research uses the most advanced modeling techniques to excel in the fields of detection and evaluation of the effects of global changes in the functioning of the Mediterranean river basins, and the management of water quality in reservoirs.

Research topics:

  • Evaluation of the current analysis of supply and demand for ecosystem services related to freshwater at water mass scale (WFD) and river basin, and evaluation of changes in these services in different scenarios, considering both global change and management scenarios.
  • Development of statistical and process-based water quality models to evaluate the effects of ecosystem service water purification on selected pollutants.
  • Design of nature-based solutions, such as green walls or river restoration actions for water purification.
