The waterPRINT research project ¨Comprehensive characterization of organic matter and biomarkers in the water cycle: integrated study of environmental proteomics and high-resolution mass spectrometry of small molecules¨, led by researchers from the Quality area of ‘Aigua del ICRA María José Farré and Mira Petrovic, has received €300,000 in funding in the latest call for “R+D+i Projects” Research Challenges modality granted by the State Research Agency (AEI) of the Ministry of Science and innovation

waterPRINT is formed by the sub-projects waterDOM (ICRA) and waterPROT (ICRA), the latter directed by Damià Barceló and Montse Carrascal. The waterDOM project has additionally received funding for a predoctoral contract.

ICRA’s work on the waterDOM project aims to provide methods and analytical tools for the global characterization of dissolved organic matter by obtaining mass profiles with high-resolution spectrometry. The fraction studied in the waterDOM project includes natural organic matter, synthetic organic compounds, transformation products as disinfection byproducts and soluble microbial products that have been previously extracted by solid phase extraction. WaterDOM will validate mass spectrometry approaches by characterizing dissolved organic matter profiles across water treatment to estimate and optimize their efficiency.
