The RECYCLO project, led by ICRA researchers Sara Rodriguez-Mozaz and Gianluigi Buttiglieri “RECYCLing waste water from small and medium sized laundries with advanced Oxidation process” has received €74,140 in funding in the last call for LIFE Projects. It is a project coordinated by TREEWATER SAS (France), five other partners (including ICRA) and a total budget of 1.48 M€ (financed 0.8 M€).

LIFE RECYCLO aims to improve the efficiency of water resources and reduce the discharge of pollutants by providing an innovative recycling process for small and medium-sized laundries . Laundries are large consumers of water in Europe, at the same time as important sources of priority micropollutants in the environment. In this project it is proposed to apply a new technology, based on advanced oxidation (AOP), for the reuse of water , which is very promising when it comes to degrading emerging pollutants . The three laundries, which participate as project partners, will become examples for the textile sector by demonstrating that the system works for different volumes of waste water and with different characteristics.

The ICRA team will develop the monitoring protocol and adapt analytical methods to laundry wastewater for emerging contaminants such as drugs, antimicrobial agents, preservatives, flame retardants, plasticizers and other plastic additives among others. With these methods, the effluents of the three laundries will be characterized and the concentrations of emerging pollutants will be determined along the different treatment configurations in the selected laundries.
