Implementation of the actions within Digital Solution G5a of the Primera Convocatória Perte Digilitación Ciclo del Agua ORDEN TED/918/2023.
The tender project, promoted by the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) at the request of the Central Board of Water Users of the Baix Ter (JCUABT), aims to assess the potential for reuse of treated wastewater at the main wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the Baix Ter area. The study is aligned with Royal Decree 1085/2024 and Regulation (EU) 2020/741 on water reuse, and seeks to identify the most appropriate uses of reclaimed water, including agricultural, urban, environmental, or aquifer recharge uses, based on technical, environmental, and regulatory criteria.
The project includes a comprehensive chemical characterization of wastewater, with particular attention to emerging contaminants (ECs) defined as indicators by Directive (EU) 2024/3019. ICRA will carry out an analytical campaign at the selected WWTPs using advanced liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques to quantify the selected compounds. In parallel, physicochemical and microbiological data will be collected to complete the assessment of water quality.
The results will be integrated into the Decision Support System (DSS) developed by ICRA, which will enable the proposal of treatment improvements and the definition of optimal treatment trains according to reuse purposes, their economic feasibility, and environmental impact. Finally, a strategic document will be drafted to serve as the basis for a future master plan for wastewater reuse in the Baix Ter, contributing to a more efficient, safe, and sustainable management of water resources in the basin.
