To mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) has actively participated in several outreach and awareness initiatives. These actions aim to encourage scientific vocations, highlight the role of women in research, and promote a critical and inclusive perspective on current environmental challenges.
Bringing science to schools
As part of the #Científiques program, organized by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) and the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), researchers Maite Pijuan and Meritxell Gros visited the Terres de Ponent Secondary School in Mollerussa (Pla d’Urgell) and the Pompeu Fabra School in Salt (Gironès). They shared their experiences as researchers with students in 5th and 6th grade of primary education and 1st grade of secondary education. These sessions allowed students to gain first-hand insight into a scientist’s work, understand the importance of water research, and break down gender stereotypes associated with scientific careers.
Media Presence
On February 10, researcher Maite Pijuan appeared on the STEAM en antena program on Girona FM. She discussed her scientific career path, highlighting her transition from laboratory work to team leadership and the coordination of high-impact social projects. She also reflected on the need to challenge stereotypes, increase the visibility of female role models, and foster scientific interest among girls, emphasizing the crucial role of the social environment and equal opportunities. Exhibition and Conference on Ecofeminism, Climate, and Water
From February 2 to 14, the Pla de Palau Civic Center hosted the exhibition “STEAM Connectades: Augmented Ecofeminisms: Climate, Water, Women,” a project exploring the impacts of climate change on freshwater ecosystems through an ecofeminist lens. The series concluded on Friday, February 13, with a lecture by researcher Anna Freixa, who invited the audience to reflect on the intersection of science, art, and gender equity.
Open House Day at ICRA
On Wednesday, February 11, coinciding with the international celebration, ICRA held an Open House Day, welcoming dozens of visitors to learn about the research conducted at the center. The event featured interactive workshops and a guided tour showcasing daily activities at the facility, with a special focus on the decisive role of women in science. The event was co-organized with the Girona City Council as part of the special program for Women and Science Week 2026. More details here.
