Faced with the increasing effects of climate change on water resources, Dr. Josep Mas-Pla , researcher at the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA-CERCA) and professor of Hydrogeology at the University of Girona, has stressed in an interview with Ràdio Capital de l’Empordà the need to adopt new measures for sustainable water management in the Baix Empordà. According to Mas-Pla, this Catalan region is in a situation of particular vulnerability in terms of water availability, a situation that could worsen in the coming years due to restrictions arising from global warming.
Dr. Mas-Pla highlighted that the Mediterranean area is experiencing a temperature increase of almost two degrees above the global average, a fact that is significantly affecting the available water resources. This scenario causes more frequent and longer periods of drought, while making it difficult to recharge natural aquifers. “We are in a reality in which we will have to learn to live with less water, and Baix Empordà is one of the areas where this challenge will be most present”, highlighted Mas-Pla.
Solutions for a water-sustainable future
Faced with this scenario, Mas-Pla has proposed several strategies to ensure a sustainable water supply in the future. Among the suggested solutions is wastewater regeneration , a technology that allows used water to be treated and reused for secondary uses, such as agricultural irrigation or industrial supply. This practice can relieve pressure on drinking water sources and help preserve existing resources.
In addition, Dr. Mas-Pla considers it essential to increase the use of desalination plants , which allow the transformation of seawater into water suitable for human consumption. Although this technology requires a significant energy investment, it can be a viable solution for areas such as Baix Empordà, especially in times of extreme drought.
Awareness and collective commitment
Mas-Pla also highlighted the need for greater social and political awareness to responsibly manage this scarce resource. According to the researcher, society will have to adopt changes in water consumption habits to adapt to new climate realities. He also calls on local and regional governments to prioritize sustainability policies and investment in infrastructure to improve water management in the territory.
Dr. Mas-Pla’s message represents a wake-up call that calls for immediate action. His experience and knowledge of the situation of water resources in Baix Empordà, as well as the proposed solutions, are an important step in raising awareness among the population and institutions about the importance of water management adapted to the climate challenges of the 21st century.
