ICRA-CERCA presents advances in the reuse of wastewater for irrigation in Mediterranean areas at the RETASTE 2024 conference

Friday, 27 September 2024

Sofia Semitsoglou-Tsiapou, postdoctoral researcher at the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA-CERCA), participated from 25 to 27 September 2024 in the fourth edition of the international conference RETASTE: Rethink Food Resources, Losses, and Waste , held in Heraklion, Greece. The conference, which brings together experts from all over the world, aims to promote the debate on innovative solutions to reduce food waste and optimize the use of food resources.

In this framework, ICRA-CERCA gave visibility to the PRIMA-SAFE project (PCI2022-132980; funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033), with a featured presentation entitled “Reclaimed wastewater fertigation in Mediterranean water-scarce areas and micropollutant uptake in tomato fruit” . In this presentation, led by Semitsoglou-Tsiapou together with a team of international researchers, preliminary results on the use of reclaimed wastewater for irrigation in Mediterranean areas with water scarcity were presented. The study also addressed the possible accumulation of micropollutants in tomato fruits, a key aspect for food security.

The PRIMA-SAFE project aims to develop sustainable technologies for agricultural irrigation that allow the use of alternative water resources, such as reclaimed wastewater, while ensuring crop quality and environmental protection. This initiative is part of the efforts to address the growing water scarcity in Mediterranean regions and promote more sustainable agricultural practices.

ICRA-CERCA’s participation in RETASTE 2024 reinforces its role as an international benchmark in applied research in water resources and environmental sustainability, as well as its commitment to the transfer of scientific knowledge to society.
